We present a new monograph of the journal Apuntes de Psicología. As its title indicates, the aim of this monograph is to provide the reader with a broad view of the current panorama of research and intervention in one of the most serious pathologies in mental health: schizophrenia.
Schizophrenia is a disorder that presents with high levels of suffering both in the person who suffers from it and in those close to him or her. Epidemiological data show that its incidence is 1/1000 population, and its prevalence is between 0.2% and 2%, although these data may vary from one study to another depending on the concept of schizophrenia and the methodology used in such studies (American Psychiatric Association, 1994). This means that a high number of people around the world, regardless of their background, economic and cultural level, have experienced during their lives some episode characterized by delusional ideas, auditory hallucinations, disorganized language and behavior and negative symptoms (American Psychiatric Association, 1994).
