The empirical literature available so far about grit, a concept introduced by Angela Duckworth in 2007, understood as perseverance and passion for long-term goals, is reviewed. The origin of the concept is examined, as well as the possible variations depending on the age and sex. Also the development of the Grit Scale and its psychometric properties. Likewise, the common and differentiating elements between grit and other non-cognitive variables usually associated with this notion (responsibility, resistance, self-control and resilience) are considered, as well as the results found in research that evaluates the predictive value of these variables for the academic performance and success. Some limitations found in the research on grit and possible measures to be taken to generate a solid body of knowledge aroundthis variable are raised.
