Gender, power relationships and human sexuality

Discrimination against women persists and is not always explicitly manifested. This paper analyzes the discrepancies between “formal equality” and “real inequalities” in reference to two key human motivations, power and sexuality. The undeniable advances in both areas by women hide the persistence of hierarchical normative models in which masculinity is constructed from autonomy, while femininity is constructed from fragmentation.
The erotic of power, characteristic of independent personalities, continues to be linked to masculinity, while women are educated to grant power to others, assuming as their own what this entails in terms of responsibility. The principle of pleasure continues to be the basic objective of male sexuality, unlike female education, which favors obtaining pleasure by giving satisfaction to others.
It is incompatible to develop our women identity as autonomous persons, with economic and emotional independence, with decision-making capacity and expectations of personal fulfillment and, at the same time, to maintain, as is currently the case, the position of dependence and lack of autonomy. Suggestions are made for women to talk about their experiences of power and sexual experiences.
