The article presents the results of a study of a classification based on four types of drug abuse: Type A (traumatic), Type B (derived from present neurosis), Type C (transition) and Type D (sociopathic personality disorders). In this article, the characteristics and therapeutic evolution of a sample of 110 heroin addicts belonging to four outpatient clinics and a therapeutic community in Seville were studied. The results point to some variables that should be considered in the analysis of demand. It is concluded that the drug abuse types should be taken into account when both specific prevention and therapeutic programmes are designed and implemented.
