Abstract

Interpersonal relationships usually involve character and behavioural elements that originate in childhood. If these elements have not been productively reshaped by the mature ego, they can give rise to more or less distorted and conflictual interrelationships, since they are based on inappropriate expectations and lead to actions that are not suited to the reality of the present interaction.

This set of behavioural elements is classified in psychoanalysis as transference reactions, and their management in therapy is of paramount importance, especially when they become what is known as transference neurosis, the analysis and resolution of which constitute the battlefield in which the restoration of balance and mental health must be pursued.
