Changes in relationships with parents and siblings were longitudinally studied at ages 13-15 and 15-17 in 604 8th-10th graders from Paraná, Argentina. In both waves they completed questions on personal relationships, Kovacks Child Depression Inventory and Jakobsen et al. Substance Use Scale. Although closeness to parents had decreased,at ages 15-17 the vast majority felt satisfied with them; they were the most beloved and admired people and they ranked first as support providers in different situations. Mothers were preferred over fathers and the father-daughter bond was more distant than the father-son one. Siblings ranked third among the most loved people, the relationship
with them was satisfactory and the fraternal quarrels, infrequent. Those having a better family relationship at age 13-15 showed less depressive symptoms and less substance use two years later.
