Abstract

Workaholism is a worldwide concern due to its serious consequences, and university teachers characterize it as a risky occupation. The present study aimed to identify the predictors of work addiction in a sample of 225 Brazilian university professors. As research instruments, a sociodemographic and occupational questionnaire, the Dutch Work and Addiction Scale (DUWAS), the Copenhagen Psychosocial Questionnaire (COPSOQII) and a single item for Satisfaction with life were used. Data analysis was performed using Multiple Linear Regression for the two
dimensions of Workaholism, Excessive Work (EW) and Compulsive Work (CW). The EW dimension revealed a predictive model composed of the variables greater quantitative demand, meaning of work, remuneration, lower satisfaction with life, social support, and female gender. For the CW dimension, the model was explained by the greater quantitative demand and commitment at work and lower satisfaction with life. The results can support new studies and interventions aimed at improving well-being at work and the quality of life among university professors.
