This paper examines the relation between some principal self-referred varia- bles and burnout syndrome. Taking into consideration a sociocognitive orientation, the burnout syndrome is shown as a multidimensional process that is influenced by individual, interpersonal and organizational factors. We developed the most important theoretical implications and empirical results from models elaborated considering the role and functions of self-efficacy, self-confidance and self-esteem in the etiology of burnout.
