Pathological Gambling is defined and diagnostic criteria after DSM-IV are
listed. The main disorders associated to the excesive gambling behavior are
discussed: relationship with other pathologies, relationship with the addiction to
other substances, and family, relations, economical and work disorders. After
discussing the psychological treatments propossed by the different views, the real
limitations faced by the psychologist in the practical implementation of these
propossals in the self-help organizations are listed and discussed, as well as the
actual help that this professional can provide within that context. Finally, the
relationship of the psychologist with other professionals working in those
associations (social workers and psychiatrists) is discussed, and suggestions are
made to prevent the increase of the problem.
