From a humanitarian, ethical and professional view, we present a reflection on the results of the scientific literature on factors that can provide the best quality of life possible for old people, and their relatives, at the end of their lives. Our conclusions are based as well on a case analysis coming from an exploratory research conducted by our research team. The study was aimed at understanding the experiences of the dependent old people and their families (Gómez, 2007). Data shows that most of our old people are in fact cared by their families, that old people prefer staying at home than living in institutions and that, sometimes, to assist old people may be a heavy burden difficult to stand.
