In most scientific disciplines that also have an applied professional dimension, there is a clear distinction between aspects of basic research, or theory, and aspects of professional practice. This differentiation poses integration challenges—not always successfully resolved—between the two spheres. From time to time, divergences become more pronounced, and overtones of controversy emerge, which we consider inappropriate.
However, we believe that this may be one of those moments, given the recent surge of new psychology professionals in recent years.
We propose that among the reasons that may lead to a tension between theory and practice are, on the one hand, the inadequate conceptualization of the term “theory” and, on the other, the insufficient training currently provided to psychology students in both domains—theoretical and practical.
The recent publication, in this same journal, of the articles by BARRIGA (1984) and BENJUMEA & RUIZ (1984) has provided a starting point for us to offer a set of reflections in a humble attempt to address and improve certain issues.
