Abstract

In social psychology the study of jealousy has focused on aspects such as its definition, its manifestations and theoretical perspectives to study. This paper examines the presence and persistence of the romantic myth of jealousy in general population and its relationship with sociodemographic characteristics and partner relationships. The study sample was selected from among the general population through a stratified sampling by gender and within each stratum by odds on the basis of age, and consisted of 1351 people. Data were collected by a questionnaire designed ad hoc. The results indicate that about 70% of people interviewed rejected this myth and this rejection was higher among women, people of middle age, college educated, with at less a couple with whom have lived and with a partner in the moment of the interview.
