Abstract

The present work describes the life and career of Dr. José López Ruiz, who studied at the University of Barcelona and was among the first Psychology graduates in Spain. Dr. López Ruiz was one of the pioneers of the psychology profession in Seville, teaching
at the city’s university practically since the inception of the discipline there, and for almost three decades. This account covers his time as a student, his early years in the profession and his work at the university, situated in the context in which they took place, and completed with a brief sketch of his principal characteristics as a teacher, as a researcher and as a person who held several academic posts The work is based on a range of documentary sources, as well as descriptions provided by people who worked with him at different stages of his career. As a work of Microhistory or Local History it also sets out to provide an insight into an era of the psychological profession in this particular context.
