General systems theory is a paradigm that is increasingly established as a clear alternative in the field of community intervention. After introducing a systemic view of reality, this paper presents the family as an open system, faced with the challenge of evolving without continuous instability. Regarding psychological health, both an unstable family and one that overly constrains its members can be equally harmful.
