Abstract

Trainees in family therapy explored the impact of the contribution that their experiences in their families of origin made to their knowledge and competency as family therapists. The importance of these experiences as a valuable resource was researched beginning in 2003 in the Mara Selvini Palazzoli School in Milan and beginning in 2007 with trainees of the Institute of Family Therapy in Santiago de Chile (this project continues). Being a work in process we can present some  preliminary conclusions that will be subject to further investigations and which will be presented in detail in future publications. We have made progress, both in the comprehension of the vocational choice of the trainees and in the acquisition of new abilities and competences for the professional practice.
