This paper presents an updated review of scientific literature on cognitive restructuring, both in terms of outcome studies and processes studies. This technique was chosen among the many possible techniques for its clinical relevance and for the number of issues that remain unresolved in the literature. It begins with a discussion of the main features of the outcome research (study of treatments of choice for various psychological problems) and of the processes research (study of the mechanisms responsible for change) in psychotherapy in general; then we summarize both types of studies on cognitive restructuring. It can be concluded that restructuring technique works, but it remains unclear what mechanisms are responsible for its success. It is suggested that it is necessary to analyze the therapist-client interaction in order to advance in this field.
