The aim of this study is to examine the psychopathological consequences of cohabiting with someone suffering from a personality disorder. The families of these patients, who play a key role, especially in treatment support, face a pathology which has repercussions, at least, for their own health and, eventually, for their quality of life. 44 subjects were selected and divided into two groups according to whether they were regular carers for someone with a personality disorder or not. The subjects completed Symptom Checklist-90-R (Derogatis, 1994) and were interviewed to capture details about themselves and their families and about any illness suffered by both the carer and the patient suffering the personality disorder. The results indicate that the carer group presents more psychopathological symptoms than the control group, the most prominent being anxiety, depression, obsession, hostility and psychoticism.Downloads
