Abstract

This study was designed to assess the structures of the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) for 136 professional of Hospital Psychiatric Prison of Seville, from prison officers to psychiatrist. Responses were factor analysed using principal components and a Varimax rotation. Exploratory factor analysis offered five factors with eigenvalues exceeding unity. Items offer Emotional Exhaustion loaded on Factor I, items of Depersonalisation on Factor II, and items of Personal Accomplishment on Factor III, Factor
IV and Factor V. A second factor analysis was carried out with a specification to extract three factors. This factor analysis showed a factor structure consistent with the original. However, items 6, 14 and 16 loaded on Emotional Exhaustion and Depersonalisation dimensions. As a whole, results show that the MBI appears to be valid and reliable for Spanish prison professionals.
