Multiple sclerosis and suicidal behavior: A critical narrative review from the perspectives of social determinants of health and psychology

Introduction. The risk of suicidal behavior among people with multiple sclerosis requires an analysis of the social determinants of health, psychosocial factors, and the psychological processes involved.
Method. A critical narrative review was conducted, including a literature search and an interpretive thematic synthesis of the literature identified
through searches in PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, SciELO, Dialnet, and Google Scholar for the period 2000–2025. A total of 95 references were included and organized into five thematic axes.
Results. Given the influence of social determinants of health, psychosocial factors, and psychological processes, this review proposes motherhood, fatherhood, and partner relationships as intermediate social determinants that may modulate psychosocial vulnerability and suicide
risk among people with multiple sclerosis.
Discussion. The integration of psychological and social intervention, healthcare, and community resources, especially following diagnosis, worsening disability, and loss of autonomy, may
contribute to the prevention of suicidal behavior among people with multiple sclerosis.
