Introduction. Perinatal loss can give rise to fears related to identity, the future, and social evaluation, which have received less attention than other manifestations of psychological distress. The aim was to analyze fears following perinatal loss and their relationship with emotional distress and perceived deterioration in personal life.
Method. A cross-sectional study was conducted with 158 individuals who had experienced a perinatal loss. Ten fears, emotional
distress, and perceived deterioration were assessed. Linear regressions, Welch’s t tests and Welch’s ANOVA, Spearman correlations, and Necessary Condition Analysis (NCA) were performed.
Results. The most intense fears were fear of not becoming a parent, fear of guilt, and fear of failure. Women and younger participants reported higher levels of fear. Specific fears differed according to characteristics of the loss. All fears were significantly associated with emotional
distress and perceived deterioration, with fear of failure showing the strongest associations. NCA identified four fears as quasi-necessary conditions for high levels of emotional distress, while fear of being judged and fear of stigma were identified as quasi-sufficient conditions.
Discussion. The findings support incorporating the assessment of specific fears into psychological care following perinatal loss.
